Steadfast proponents of social change through music, Kim and Reggie Harris, return for their third CD for Appleseed with another diverse assortment of meaningful songs. The balance of the material slants toward the contemporary, since seven of the tracks were written by Reggie, by himself or in collaboration with Kim. The topics are relevant in so many ways. "Get On Board" and "Run Mary Run" are traditional Underground Railroad songs, cheek to cheek with modern civil rights anthems "Eyes on the Prize," Phil Ochs' "Too Many Martyrs (The Ballad of Medgar Evans)." The long ignored plight of the Negro League ballplayers by Major League Baseball, is captured on "The Stars that Didn't Shine," and the issue of violence is dramatically portrayed on "Crack in the Wall". One of the best-known songs on Rock of Ages is "Passive Restraint", a song written by Reggie and featured on National Public Radio's "Car Talk!" program. Since Appleseed founder Jim Musselman's work as a consumer advocate with Ralph Nader led to mandatory seatbelt rules, the song is particularly appropriate. On a more personal level, Reggie's "Four Walls" is a celebration of love for this longtime love duo. "We All Belong to Love," takes a look the fragility of that blissful condition; "Home Again", conveys the loss of a friend in death, and "Walkin' in the Wilderness," a promise of perseverance.. Accompanying Kim and Reggie's lovingly entwined vocals are Reggie's powerful acoustic guitar is given additional support by guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison), bassist Mark Murphy, and longtime Harris drummer/percussionist Brian Melick. It is a collection of original songs, songs of freedom and covers of Phil Ochs, Bob Franke and Chris Farrell.

"Simplicity" is like an open window on the seemingly self-evident but obviously hard-to-achieve concept that global peace and understanding are the only means for our own survival and that of future generations. A recording that was started on 9/12/2001, the CD's fourteen tracks mix Kim and Reggie originals with traditional compositions and songs by Sting (We Work the Black Seam), Phil Ochs (Changes), and Pete Seeger (Rainbow Race), among others, and the theme remains the same: learn and adapt or be chained to the mistakes of history. Other guest include John Sebastian, Karen Brandow and Charlie King, Magpie, Troy Messenger and percussionist Brian Melick. The determined spirit of optimism and activism that inspired Simplicity is introduced on the CD's opening song, the traditional spiritual "This Little Light of Mine. A collaboration between Kim and Reggie and their friend Rabbi Jonathan Kligler of Kehillat Lev Shalem, the Woodstock Jewish Congregation in Woodstock, NY. "Let My People Go!" seamlessly interweaves songs from the Passover Haggadah, the book chronicling the Jews' exodus from Egypt, with traditional Black Spirituals carrying the ideals of equality and freedom, and songs from the Civil Rights era by Phil Ochs ("What's That I Hear") and Freedom Singers Marshall and Matt Jones (who perform their respective compositions "In the Mississippi River," a gospel-blues about the three Civil Rights activists slain in 1964, and the CD-closing statement of faith and purpose, "I Won't Turn Back"). There is also a moving poem by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, "I Have a Million Nightingales, set to music by Jewish cantor Linda Hirschhorn, and a new composition by Kim and Reggie - "Freedom Road" - that summarizes the unquenchable desire for and journey toward equality and self-determination.
